Jose Pillich and I decided to join forces to focus the “Weekly Data Story” examining heat vulnerability issues in Baltimore City. We will conduct geospatial exploratory analysis to examine the factors that contribute, or mitigate, heat vulnerability issues. Our primary goal is to raise awareness about heat vulnerability issues and present different spatial analysis techniques that can be used to analyze this issue.
Jose is particularly excited about this spatial analysis because his doctoral dissertation focused on examining heat vulnerability in New York City. Jose believes that heat vulnerability concerns should be at the forefront of policy decisions in the same way as other environmental risks such as hurricanes. I am a Baltimore transplant and particularly interested in helping this awesome city become more resilient by creating impactful relationships with Baltimore communities.
Our spatial analysis will cover a broad range of issues such as understanding the impact of trees, vulnerable populations, different rooftops and using new tools to do heat vulnerability analysis. For the first post in the series, we wanted to keep it light and used the Prettymapp’s library to produce these cool maps of Baltimore.
