What are Climate Change Adaptation Strategies?

Climate Change Adaptation Strategies are proactive measures taken to prepare a community for Climate Change-related impacts. These strategies often include research and data collection on Climate Change trends in the area, developing plans for responding to various Climate Change scenarios, and promoting Climate Resilience initiatives.

What are climate mitigation strategies?

Climate mitigation strategies are the proactive measures taken to reduce Climate Change-related impacts. These strategies often involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources, increasing energy efficiency, investing in Climate Change research and development, and engaging in public education campaigns. Climate mitigation also involves developing land use plans that take Climate Change into account, as well as creating Climate Resilience plans that prepare communities for Climate Change-related weather events such as floods or droughts.

What can I do to help my community become Climate Resilient?

There are many things we can do to help our community become more Climate Resilient! You can join an existing Climate Resilience organization, lobby for Climate Resiliency policies at the local or state level, participate in Climate Change-focused hackathons and challenges, and create online content such as videos or podcasts about Climate Change and Natural Hazards. You may also be able to volunteer with a Climate Resilience project in your area to gain hands-on experience with how communities are responding to Climate Change impacts. Whatever actions you decide to take on Climate Resilience, you’ll be contributing important knowledge and insights that will help protect our communities.

How can GIS help Climate Change resilience?

GIS (Geographic Information System) is a powerful tool that can be used to gain insight into Climate Change-related impacts. By using GIS, you can visualize data such as topography, hydrology, and climate in order to identify areas at risk of flooding or other extreme weather events. Additionally, GIS can be used to monitor changes in land use and analyze potential Climate Change adaptation strategies. GIS allows for the efficient sharing of Climate Change resilience plans and best practices between communities. This data is available online from many local agencies and can be used to create your own Climate Change resilience maps. Climate Change resilience plans can be tailored to the unique needs of each community and GIS is an invaluable tool in making sure that these plans are successful.
